Nanny of the Maroons, National Hero, Jamaica

Nanny was a Maroon leader who fought the British and in 1741, by land treaty, established her own country for her people in the Blue Mountains of Portland, Jamaica. The rest of Jamaica was enslaved until 1836. Her capital, New Nanny Town now known as Moore Town, is a UNESCO designated World Intangible Heritage Site .
